The II Brazilian LHC Computing workshop held last week represented  a unique opportunity to get acquainted with GRID computing and related technologies. Today, as our participation in the PHENIX experiment and ATLAS Heavy Ion group undertakes a path to distributed and collaborative computing environment, the importance of discussing the different approaches toward GRID architectures adopted by the LHC experiments is paramount. The overview provided by the UNESP group exposing their setup and detailing the steps involved in the installation and deployment of the services was in all aspects very valuable. Finally, the richness of the conversations enabled by the diversity of the experiments there represented and the fact that this is an ever evolving technology, more than justify new editions of this workshop.

The first day of the II Brazilian LHC Computing Workshop was entirely dedicated to discussions of the GRID infra-structure concerning the ALICE collaboration. The presentations and discussions were lead by Patricia Mendez, a GRID expert from CERN who is the contact person between WLCG and the ALICE collaboration. Her presentations were very clear and enlightening. During the following days of the workshop, Patricia assisted the ALICE Brazilian group in the installation of a considerable part of the GRID infra-structure software in the group’s computer cluster. Significant progress was obtained and this initiative was a very important milestone for the deployment of a ALICE GRID site in Brazil. The Brazilian site can already be seen in the ALICE Monalisa world wide monitoring. We are convinced that the workshop was very productive and initiatives like this must be repeated in order to have a competitive and significant Brazilian participation in the international GRID endeavor.

The II BLHCCW Workshop combined in a single meeting all the LHC experiments GRID projects, covering the general middlewares of EGEE and OSG, as well as the particular software bundle of each experiment. The Computing Model used by each experiment was discussed in detail, allowing a comparison of their differences and giving us a working understanding of the crucial issues involved in supporting the each one. In my specific case, the detailed discussion of the CMS experiment storage was very important for defining how to proceed in the short and medium time scale to support the huge storage demands of the order of hundreds of Terabytes. I think this Workshop should be continued during the incoming years, allowing us to improve the support for all experiments that use our GRID infrastructure
